Día de Muertos

Bern 2022

During the Mexican ritual of Día de Muertos, altars are crafted, adorned with the favorite foods, objects, and portraits of our departed loved ones. This symbolizes that by remembering them, they remain alive in the afterlife. Painting one’s face with a calavera, a “skull,” carries more significance than a mere reminder of mortality—it conveys a message of hope for a joyous reunion through remembrance. The Street-Portraits Project delves into our daily attire as a ritual, reflecting our deep-seated need for belonging to a larger group, our tribe. This concept beautifully resonates with Día de Muertos, echoing our longing to remain connected with our loved ones, our tribe, even beyond death.
